Cost versus value

There may be a capital cost on the design and construction of a new building with enhanced sustainability performance which ranges between 2% and 5% compared to a standard/notional building .  The value of this rate depends on:
  • The stage at which the sustainability strategy is set.
  • The experience of sustainability consultants.
  • The desired degree of building's sustainability.
  • The characteristics of standard / notional building which varies depending on the developer / contractor / country.
  • The location and characteristics of the site.
  • The national market maturity on sustainability.
  • The quality of national infrastructure (Cleanliness of national grid electricity etc).

However, this capital cost is outweighed by added value and reductions costs during the lifetime operation and maintenance of the building.
Furthermore, it needs to be seen in the context of the overall value and benefits of sustainable development.
